Golf In The United States

Golf first officially hit North America in 1873 with the establishment of the Royal Montreal Club in Canada. Appropriately, it was a Scotsman who helped golf gain popularity in the United States. John Reid first built a 3-hole course in Yonkers, NY, then established the St. Andrews Club of Yonkers later that same year. The first of the "classic" American courses, Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, NY, was built in 1891, and by the turn of the century, over 1,000 courses had popped up across North America.

Now, from its humble beginnings in rugged Scotland, the game of golf has become a popular pastime. It isn't even about the competition, usually. People love to relax and knock a little while ball around. Even a few buckets at a driving range can take the edge off a tough week.

With the game's popularity, some very clever golf tournament prizes have been invented, making them game of golf even more fun, light-hearted, and chill.

Putt-Putt golf is an entirely different story. Don't ask.
